THE ROOTS OF NATURE, SLOWLY EVOLVING
INTO LOVING INSPIRING CENTERPIECES
DESIGNED WITH SOUL AND CARE
EMBRACING THE SLOW LIVING
TO LAST A LIFE TIME, A STORY UNFOLDING

The initial inspirations for ‘slow wood’ come from ideas about simplicity and nature. Each piece is made with love for the material and gratitude for the earth. Our designs are gracefully simple and quietly elegant.

The design process always involves answering the question how to create timeless, durable pieces that have a small ecological footprint.
SlowWood’s archetypical products are well-made modest and humble pieces that fit into any interior easily.

Care

Every SlowWood table is unique and will only evolve more uniqueness while being part of your interior. Its good to know a few things about your wooden table to make sure it will last a lifetime.

Wood reacts to temperature and humidity. An indoor temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius and a humidity of 55-65% is the ideal climate for your wooden table. Large fluctuations in these factors can cause reactions in the wood (small cracks, shrinkage). This is not a defect, but demonstrates the natural character of the material. Measure the humidity with a hygrometer, for a good climate for you and your wooden table. If possible, keep the table out of direct sunlight to avoid cracks and color differences. Please make sure that you do not place objects in the same place for a long time in the first months if you want to prevent discoloration in the leaves. Try not to cover your table with airtight material for long periods of time. Avoid hot objects directly on the table. Protect the surface against heat, moisture and objects that can give off color (including pollen, some rubbers, caps, etc.).

Take care of your wooden table and remember that love is always the best treatment.

Christien Starkenburg is an interior designer and founder of SlowWood, StudioSlow & art director of Jan de Jong Interior family business in Leeuwarden (est.1899). She believes in a slow lifestyle, which she applies in her work as well as in her life. ‘Slow’ ensures an attentive and pure process that is in line with Christien’s way of life and design method. Being mindful, analogue and open are important aspects that form the foundation for every SlowWood piece.

Christien loves trees, they are magical, true symbols of live. Wood keeps you connected with nature and the feeling for a simpler way of life. To rethink the essential. She calls the table a shared space, the only analogue place in the house, the place where you are together with others, where you make memories, dined endlessly, shared joys and sorrows, crafted with your children, danced on it with your best friends. This is the place where stories unfold.

WHEN YOUR EYES ARE OPEN AND THE MIND IS SLOW, BEAUTY IS TRULY FOUND IN EVERYTHING AROUND US. SLOW ENSURES AN ATTENTIVE AND PURE PROCESS.
